Hope in Darkness
by Shum Mei Ki, Maggie

Introduction
An increasing number of retailers have been affected by the coronavirus outbreak, and have closed unexpectedly. Hong Kong people are also suffering from depression.
A graphics and photographic exhibition named ‘Hope in Darkness’ will be held to convey a positive message of hope in difficult times.
Idea
Neon lights are an object of interest in my artworks. In my point of view, not only are neon signs a signature of Hong Kong culture, but they also represent persistence through their power to glow and shine like a spot in the darkness. It symbolises the spirit and hope of Hong Kong people, and encourages Hong Kong people to persist and cherish hope in this gloomy and difficult situation. Under this interpretation of a neon sign, I have created a neon yellow butterfly light as a symbol of hope.
