SOUND TO GAZE

by Lui Nok Pan

The SOUND TO GAZE (凝音成書) project is a typography project where characters have been designed to represent Hong Kong Cantonese verbal sayings that do not have formal written form.

This project was inspired by my interest in the use of onomatopoeic devices in Hong Kong comics. During my visual research, I found that Chinese characters are not easily expressed in onomatopoeic form. This is because Chinese characters are typically logograms. Unlike in English, where words can be spoken from the sounds represented by standardised letters, in Chinese, words are highly stylized and simplified pictures of real-world material objects.

That is why I created「 凝音字」, a set of characters that combine the Chinese equivalent of English initials and finals into a set of phonogram characters that represent verbal sounds.

「 凝音字 」expands the Cantonese language by adding a purely phonetic range of Cantonese characters that express verbal sounds. This was done in the hope of providing more options for graphic creation in Hong Kong.
